Bachelor of Heath Science majoring in Acupuncture.
Intermediate Life Support Paramedic (St John)
Bachelor of Social Science (Honors) majoring in Psychology.

Hi there, I’m Kim.

I am a qualified traditional Chinese acupuncturist, small business owner, paramedic, wife and mother.

A natural extrovert, I love learning about others and will talk to anyone. People are my passion.

My background studies of psychology, over 10 years experience as a paramedic and education in traditional Chinese medicine puts me in a unique position to treat and heal within a totally integrative framework.

In my role as a paramedic I meet people in some of the worst moments of their lives. This has made me very practical, understanding and emphatic.

Throughout my career I realized not only the toll my job and shift work has played on my body, but also the mental and psychological stress it has had. This has widened my view on emotional stress and how it impacts physical health. This is a concept western medicine is only just beginning to acknowledge.  But one Chinese Medicine has recognized and understood for centuries!

I understand how busy modern life is and how we often put our own health needs aside to concentrate on others. Its my aim to increase the quality of life for those with acute and chronic long-term conditions.

I have a passion for dealing with chronic pain and in women’s health.

My Story

In toiling with the idea of changing my career I wanted to continue to make a difference in people’s lives and wanted to use the decade of emergency medicine experience I have.

I have always had remarkable help from acupuncture and have marveled in how it works. Feeling I had enough Western Medicine knowledge, I decided to study how it has been used traditionally in China for over 5000 years. My aim being to mesh the two together into my own unique style of practice, that benefits my clients.

Travel

After Uni I needed a break, so I left New Zealand the week after my final exam to travel for 6 months: I was gone 7 years!

I have traveled most of the globe and lived in four countries. I did all of it by myself, no friends, no family, no schedule, and, most of the time, no money. Care free and foot loose with just myself to lean on.

This experience helped mould me into the independent, strong and resilient women I am today.

Paramedicine and Family

Nearing 30, I started thinking it was time to begin an adult life. Sitting at a café (strangely in Tauranga) I watched an ambulance race down the road I thought ‘I’d be good at that’. And I am.

I love my job! I am there during some of the most life-changing and emotional times in people’s lives.  Sometimes these have been the worst moments, sometimes the best moments and sometime the most defining moments of people’s lives. I like to think I help ease the pain, tension and stress of those times by making these situations (a little) easier for people to deal with.

I have worked for St John in Auckland for 13 years. During this time I met my husband (who is my balancing agent).  We have had two sons who are both bold, brash, spirited and sooooooo loud but are kind, loving, funny and sensitive.

Having kids has made me a better paramedic, kinder, more emphatic.  But at the same time it has been harder on my soul.  Enter my next phase and why I decided to move in Chinese medicine.

Chinese Medicine

I love my job as a paramedic, but I realised I needed something a little gentler on body and soul.

Over time I noticed western medicine treats symptoms not the root cause of the problem. It lumps chronic conditions into the too hard basket and says, “here take this medicine, it sure won’t fix the problem and may have quite a few side effects but it may make you feel a little better”.

There is no time, it’s all patients in and patients out. I want to spend time, talk to my patients, get to know them and what ails them. Learn about their lives and their families.

So… in another lightning bolt idea (a little similar to watching that ambulance speed down the road) I decided to study Acupuncture. But not the western medicine version, I wanted to learn about what the Chinese have known about for 5000 years and learn the traditional way of doing it.

…It’s been a mind bender and it has taken me years to reconcile the two, but I have and now believe the two can work synergistically for the benefit of the patient. I have a unique insight into both modern and traditional medicine and believe that this integrative approach is the way forward.
